内心的话

Most people need to hear "I love you". Once in a while, they hear them just in time.

大多数人需要听到“我爱你”。有些时候，他们会及时听到这句话。

I met Connie the day she was admitted to the hospice ward（病房）, where I worked as a volunteer.

我在康妮住进临终病房的那天见到了她。我在那儿做义工。

Her husband, Bill, stood nervously nearby as she was transferred to the hospital bed.

当她被转移到病床上时，她的丈夫比尔紧张地站在旁边。

While Connie was in the final stage of her fight against cancer, she was cheerful.

虽然康妮处于与癌症抗争的最后阶段，但是她依然很乐观。

Connie was a romantic. As we became acquainted（使熟悉）, she confided（倾诉） how frustrating it was to be married 32 years to a man who often called her "a silly woman".

康妮是个浪漫的人。随着我们越来越熟，她向我倾诉，跟一个经常叫她“傻女人”的男人结婚32年是多么令人沮丧。

"I know Bill loves me," she said. "But he has never been one to say he loves me, or send cards to me. I'd give anything if he'd say 'I love you', but it's just not in his nature."

“我知道比尔爱我，” 她说。“但他从来没有说过他爱我，或送给我过卡片。如果他说一句我爱你，我愿意付出一切，但他的性格根本就不是这样。”

Soon, when Connie had fewer waking moments, I began spending more of my volunteer time with Bill.

One day, I got him on the subject of women, how we need romance in our lives and how we love to got sentimental cards.

有一天，我和他聊到关于女人的话题，聊到我们的生活多么需要浪漫，我们多么喜欢收到充满柔情蜜意的卡片。

"I don't have to," he said. "She knows I do love her!"

“我不必这么做，” 他说。“她知道我爱她！”

"I'm sure she knows," I said, "but she needs to hear what she has meant to you all these years. Please think about it."

“我相信她知道，” 我说，“但她需要知道这些年来她对你意味着什么。请你考虑下。”

Two days later I walked down the hospice ward at noon. There stood Bill, leaning against the wall in the hallway and staring at the floor.

两天后的中午，我走去临终病房。比尔站在那里，靠在走廊的墙上，眼睛盯着地板。

I already knew Connie had died at 11 a. m. When I saw Bill, his face was wet with tears and he was trembling.

我已经知道康妮在上午11点去世了。当我看到比尔时，他的脸上满是泪水，浑身颤抖。

He said, "I have to say how good I feel about telling her." He stopped to blow his nose. "This morning I told her how much I loved her and loved being married to her. You should have seen her smile!"

他说：“我必须说，告诉她之后，我的感觉真好。” 他停下来擤鼻子。“今天早上我告诉她我有多爱她，和她结婚有多幸福。你真该看看她的笑容！”

I went into the room to say goodbye to Connie.

我走进康妮的房间向她告别。

There, on the bedside table, was a large Valentine card from Bill, saying: "To my wonderful wife, I love you."

床头桌上放着一张比尔给她的大大的情人贺卡，上面写着：“给我最棒的妻子，我爱你。”
